Matt Mink Wins IDPA National Championship with Dan Wesson Pointman
Kansas City, KS – 25 September, 2006

Matt Mink

The International Defensive Pistol Association held their 2006 National Championships this week just outside of Little Rock, Arkansas. Over 300 competitors from 46 states and 5 foreign countries showed up at this years championship in order to find out who was the best. IDPA is the international governing body for the shooting sport that simulates self-defense shooting scenarios and real life encounters. IDPA has 12000 members worldwide that shoot in 5 divisions, 2 for revolvers and 3 for semi-automatic handguns.

For the first time, Matt chose to compete in the CDP (Custom Defensive Pistol) division at nationals this year. As it turns out, it was a good choice for him. The CDP division is restricted to .45 ACP caliber handguns. Most competitors shoot some version of the Model 1911, a John Browning design originally adopted by the U.S. Military in 1911. Since the first versions of the 1911 there have been many design modifications and refinements as well as improvements in reliability and accuracy. If you are going to excel in today’s competitive shooting scene, it is imperative that your equipment gives 110%. Matt’s Dan Wesson Pointman model didn’t disappoint. It delivered on the accuracy and reliability that must be present in order to win at this level.

The shooter will also have to give 110% in order perform at the highest level. Top competitive shooters today spend countless hours practicing and training. Matt estimates that throughout the course of a year he dedicates over 500 hours to practice and participates in over 50 matches.

This year’s competition was tight. Only 3 seconds total time over the course of 18 stages separated the top three shooters. After the shooting was over on the last day, Matt knew he had done well, after comparing score sheets with the competition, he knew he had earned his first national title.

As a member of the CZ-USA shooting team, Matt has consistently finished in the top 10 in both IDPA and USPSA championships over the last 3 years, he holds numerous state and regional titles, and in 2005 he finished 11th at the IPSC World Championships in Ecuador.
